Webinar series to tackle international practices for COVID-19 safe polls
QUEZON CITY – With the 2022 national elections fast approaching, the Ateneo School of Government, through Project Participate, will be having a webinar series this February that will feature international election personalities who will share their knowledge, experiences, and insights in ensuring the electoral processes continue even during the coronavirus pandemic.
Titled Halalan 2.0: Holding Free, Fair, and Safe Elections in the New Normal, the free webinar series will be having speakers from Singapore, Indonesia, and the United States who will discuss international best practices of conducting elections under COVID-19.
The first session of the webinar is “Election under COVID-19: The Indonesia Experience” will be on 10 February 2021 (Wednesday) at 2:30 PM. Indonesia General Election Commission Commissioner Dr. Hasyim Asy’ari along with Lembaga Survei Indonesia (Indonesian Survey Institute) Executive Director Dr. Djayadi Hanan and Perkumpulan Untuk Pemilu dan Demokrasi (Association for Elections and Democracy) Former Executive Director and Advisory Board Member Titi Anggraini would be discussing the recently held Indonesia regional elections amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
This event will be followed by “Election under COVID-19: The United States of America Experience” on 17 February 2021 (Wednesday) at 10:00 AM. US Election Assistance Commission Commissioner Thomas Hicks, University of Wisconsin-Madison Election Research Center Director Dr. Barry Burden, and University of North Carolina - Hussman School of Journalism and Media Associate Professor Dr. Daniel Kreiss are expected to grace the event to reflect on lessons learned from the 2020 US presidential elections.
Knowledge gathered from the sessions and research will be compiled to a manual that will recommend measures and policies to ensure a safe 2022 Philippines elections. The said manual would be turned over to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in a short ceremony on 24 February 2021 (Wednesday) at 1:00 PM.
This event will be attended by policymakers and key officials from the government, leaders of local national political parties, think tanks, and members of the academe and civil society organizations.
